Reserve Operations
The Robert R. Muntz Library provides Reserve services to support and promote the non-profit educational use of a wide variety of materials by our students and faculty. it is fundamental to the library's role as a facilitator of knowledge to execute these services in legal compliance with section 107 of the United States Copyright Act of 1976.
As a University of Texas component institution we adhere to the copyright policy set forth by that system.
Student Services
Traditional Reserves
Traditional reserve items are located at the Circulation Desk on the second floor of the Library. A valid University Identification card (P2) must be presented to check out reserve items. Loan periods are set by each instructor and vary from 2-hours in library use to 2 weeks checkout. Reserve materials may not be renewed. Fines accrue at a rate of $.50 per hour for in-use materials and $.50 per day for items checked out of the building.
Electronic Reserves
The electronic reserve system is a web based service that uses the latest technology to provide document delivery in an electronic format. It is password protected. The system allows students to find, view and print course materials that have been placed on reserve by instructors. Available materials may include journal articles, exams, course syllabi, problem sets, short book chapters and other formats. Items may be retrieved by performing a search by instructor name or by department name, course name and course number.
Electronic reserves may be accessed through the library's homepage at any time, day or night. Students may access material from any computer with an internet connection. There are computer workstations located on the second floor of the library available to students any time the library is open. For more information on electronic reserves, please contact Tamara Brown by telephone at (903) 566-7342 or by e-mail.
Faculty Services
Traditional Reserves
The Library can place both library owned and personal copies of material on reserve. Personal material placed on reserve for the first time will not require copyright permission. Use of that same material in any subsequent semester will require copyright permission. The following guidelines must be observed when submitting material for placement on Reserve:
- A Reserve Request Form must accompany each individual item. An item will not be processed without the completed form. Forms can be obtained at the Circulation Desk, through Campus Mail (Call 566-7342) or you can download the PDF Reserves form for convenient printing.
- Allow 2-3 working days for items to be processed. Material is processed strictly on a first come, first served basis. Items to be used at the beginning of a semester should be submitted 7-10 working days before classes begin.
- All personal material will be bar-coded and incorporated into the library's security system.
- Individual articles, tests and papers must be placed in separate folders and clearly labeled with class and title information. A maximum of 3 copies of an item will be processed.
- Your personal material will be removed from reserve and returned to you at the end of each semester via Campus Mail unless other arrangements are made. Any further use as a reserve item will require proof of copyright permission.
Electronic Reserves
Instructors may utilize electronic reserves to place course syllabi, study guides, articles, short book chapters, and other materials on a customized web page with password protected remote access. There is also a real-time chat room function available and a bulletin board feature which can be utilized to make electronic announcements (also password protected). ERES has the ability to track usage statistics and we will be glad to provide those statistics to you upon request.
For each course an Electronic Reserves Request Form must be completed. You can obtain the forms at the Circulation Desk, through the Campus Mail (Call 566-7342) or download and print the PDF EReserves form. These forms must be signed by you to comply with copyright laws, so they may not be submitted electronically. Please return them to Tamara Brown in the campus mail, or drop them off at the Circulation Desk.
If you are new to ERES it is strongly suggested that you contact Tamara Brown. This will enable the library staff to set up a personal account for you and give you a demonstration of the capabilities of our system.
