Who are UT Tyler's Distance Learners?

UT Tyler students currently enrolled in UT Tyler courses via Interactive Television (ITV) or Internet courses offered by the UT System Telecampus. UT Tyler students enrolled in classes at the main campus in Tyler are not considered Distance Learners even if they commute to Tyler from distant locations.

Can distance learners request books and other materials from the Muntz Library?

Yes! Each semester, all currently enrolled students need to register as a library user. You may register online by using the Registration Form. The Registration Form requires your nine digit student ID (P2) number. You will find your ID number on your UT Tyler billing statement. Once completed, simply click the Submit button. Click on Materials Request Form and let us know what you need. Please fill out a form for each separate item. A TexShare Borrower's Card will be mailed to your home address.

Alternatively, when you come to campus, you can get a picture ID (Patriot Power/P2) card from Student Business Services (Cashier's Office) then come to the library to register. If you visit the library, take the time to get a quick hands-on lesson in using the online services, and visit with the staff at Interlibrary Services to discuss any of your particular needs. They are located in Room 221.

How do I use the Library's information databases?

The Library's website provides access to all electronic databases available from off campus, the Muntz Library Online Catalog and the other online databases and information resources. Nearly all databases are now available off-campus. When you click on a database, a login screen appears, with login information. If your name is not in the list of current students at UT Tyler, login is not possible. If you think there is an error, please call 903-566-7343 for assistance. Soon we will have online tutorials for these services which you can view from your home.

Are library materials available at distance sites?

Muntz Library-owned materials at distance sites presently include the College of Nursing collections at the UT Tyler Extended Campus in Palestine and the Longview Center. Longview Center also has a small reference collection in its library. Materials may be checked out at these two locations. In the Muntz Library Online Catalog, any items with PALNURS (Palestine Nursing) or LVIEW (Longview Center) under "location" are at those locations. Look at "Item Holdings" to see this information.

Are computers available at distance sites?

Computer labs for accessing the Library website and other Internet sites are located at both the Palestine and Longview sites. Computers at these two sites provide access to all databases currently available on the UT Tyler main campus.

How will distance learners receive delivery of books and other materials?

Interlibrary Services Department at the Muntz Library provides delivery of materials; both Muntz Library-owned materials as well as those borrowed from another library. After registering with the library, use the Materials Request Form to ask for materials. Method of delivery depends upon type of material:

  • Photocopied items (periodical articles, pages from books, etc.) are sent by mail to the site or mailed directly to the student or faxed to a fax number when document quality will be acceptable.
  • Books are sent by courier to Palestine or Longview sites and are also mailed within the continental United States. For special considerations, please call the Interlibrary Services office at 903-566-7396.

Are there any charges for these services?

There are no charges for these services except when materials borrowed from another library incur charges. Charges of this type are passed on to any UT Tyler student who requests these items. Indicate maximum charges you are willing to pay on the materials request form.
